Riding on the NDA’s commanding electoral victory in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party in Guwahati today, paving the path for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government’s return to power in Assam for a third consecutive term.

The decision sets the stage for Himanta to take oath as the Chief Minister of Assam on May 12 in a high-profile ceremony expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the chief guest, along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, senior Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states.

The newly elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party, Himanta Sarma said, “On May 12, the NDA Council of Ministers will take oath in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I request the people of Assam to continue blessing us in the future as well. We aim to take Assam forward and make it one of the most developed states in the country. I express my gratitude to Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia. We will meet the Governor of Assam to stake our claim to form the next government.”

 

BJP Legislature Party Meet in Guwahati

The BJP Legislature Party meeting was held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, where newly elected BJP MLAs gathered to formally elect their leader following the NDA alliance’s emphatic victory in the Assam Assembly elections.

Party leaders described the development as a “joyous day for Assam,” celebrating the NDA’s return to power with a commanding mandate.

BJP to Stake Claim Before Governor

Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia said the party would meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya later in the day to formally stake claim to form the government.

“After this, a meeting with the NDA legislators would be held. Later in the day, we will meet the Governor and stake claim for the government,” Saikia said after the Legislature Party meeting.

 

He added that preparations for the oath-taking ceremony were progressing at full pace, with top NDA leaders expected to attend the event in large numbers.

“The preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are in full swing. The Chief Minister will take the oath. PM Modi, HM Amit Shah, BJP National President and top NDA leaders will be present,” he said.
